Showing up for Pittsburgh

Anytime a tragedy affects our community we all feel it. This past weekend our hearts broke as we learned of the mass shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Our thoughts are with the families and communities impacted by this horrific act of violence. We remember Melvin Wax, Irving Younger, Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, brothers Cecil and David Rosenthal, Rose Mallinger, Bernice and Sylvan Simon, Daniel Stein, Joyce Fienberg, and Dr. Richard Gottfried. May their memories be a blessing.
Our NewGround community is built upon the foundation of Muslims, Jews, and our allies being there for each other. Immediately following the news breaking, we were able to find comfort, solidarity, and inspiration in the way our alumni and community members came together to support one another. Knowing that the Tree of Life synagogue was targeted not only because of anti-Semitism but also due to the synagogue’s support for Muslim refugees was a difficult reminder of the critical importance of our relationships. We hope you will join our change-makers in #ShowingUp for each other, gathering together wherever you can, in one another’s homes, in community institutions, or even just reaching out to one another by text. One way to we can stand in solidarity together this week is to #ShowUpForShabbat regardless of your connection to faith– we hope you will reach out to friends and find ways to fill space with your presence. We will continue to bring Muslims, Jews, and allies together to create community grounded in understanding and built upon strong and resilient relationships that will continue to support us all. 30 October 2018: We have learned that a Muslim school and mosque in Los Angeles have both been closed due to a credible threat brought to them by law enforcement. #ShowingUp will allow us all to reclaim our spaces – together.
