Our hearts break with each new story that comes to us of community members facing terrible loss in the Los Angeles wildfires. Several NewGround alumni and supporters have lost their homes. Beloved institutions have been destroyed, including Masjid al-Taqwa, the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center, and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

We are also inspired by the ways that our communities are stepping up to help each other and the tens of thousands displaced by these fires. This past Sunday, in place of our regular scheduled MAJIC session, students met at the Westchester YMCA to help those impacted by the fires. We sorted, organized donations and helped impacted families “shop” for items they needed. It was humbling and heartwarming to see Angelenos step up to support one another so quickly.
