In October 2024, we created a memorial installation for our Remembering Sacred Lives event. This “Names, Not Numbers” instillation is now available for viewing at the IMAN Cultural Center – Community Room from Sunday March 23rd to Friday March 28th. This is a powerful piece and we hope you all are able to see it. Detailed Description below:
Ink on 20 sheets of paper, wooden stakes, burlap bags, earth.
Each sheet of paper measures 3ft x 10ft and is formatted with 40 pages, approx. 45-50 names per page, printed at 10 pt. font.
36,020 recorded names of those killed since October 7, 2023.
1,678 names were provided by Ha’aretz news source. The record reflects names counted up until October 2, 2024. In the original record, Ha’aretz included the deceased name in Hebrew and English, place of living/birth, age, and date of death. Additionally, if relevant, it included a military title, and if known, it referenced the place of death, and if available, it provided a photograph of the deceased. There were names in which information was missing and thus omitted from this record.
Note: Ha’aretz’s list included Jewish Israeli nationals, Palestinian citizens of Israel, foreign nationals, Bedouin, Druze, and one Palestinian from Gaza struck by an Iranian missile in Jericho.
34,342 names were provided by the Gazan Ministry of Health. Their record reflects names counted up until September 21, 2024. In the original record, the Gazan Ministry of Health includes the deceased’s name in English and Arabic, identification number, age, date of birth, gender, and source.
Note: This record only includes the names of those whose bodies were recovered and able to be identified.
At this time, these records do not include the names of Palestinians killed in the West Bank, nor the names of those killed in Lebanon.
Seeing the tens of thousands of names all in one place helps to remind us what is at stake as the crisis continues. This record is incomplete, and our mourning will not be complete until the crisis ends.
