NG Book Club: Conversation about Albert Memmi, “The Pillar of Salt,” on Dec. 16th at 11:30 AM PST

We are meeting for our final book club meeting in 2024, learning about the world of Tunisian-Jewish author, Albert Memmi (1920-2020). Memmi’s first book, The Pillar of Salt, is a semi-autobiographical novel written in 1952. Join us on Zoom by clicking here.

We are fortunate to learn more about his life and work in conversation with two well respected and dynamic professors. Dr. Jessica Marglin specializes in the history of Jews in modern North Africa and the Mediterranean, with a focus on law. Anthropologist Margaux Fitoussi created the short documentary EL HARA, focusing on the historic Jewish neighborhood of Tunis, which will be available for you to watch here before our session on December 16, 11:30 AM on Zoom. You will need to have a Vimeo account in order to watch the film. If you don’t have one yet, you can create one for free.

We’re so glad you’re joining us for this event.

If you were not able to join us for our conversation with Palestinian writer, Ibtisam Barakat we hope you will watch the discussion here. If you were with us for the conversation, please give us your feedback by filling out this short survey. This not only helps us make our programs more engaging, but it’s also important for our reporting to California Humanities, whose generous support makes these author conversations possible.
